Studio is a time where students learn about the behaviors of the art room, how to use materials, experiment and play with art. The student gets to be the artist, make decisions about what they want to make and in the process, learn about problem solving, as well as what it means to be creative and innovative. Third through fifth grade spent studio time creating projects that reflected their own Culture. Each project could be linked to family, friends, heritage, and home.
The process involves focusing in on an idea and then spending some time with experimentation before landing on a project idea. Once students have an idea, they collect their materials, and begin creating. Each student has a checklist that they use to stay on track. They then end with a presentation to their peers, along with a written artist statement about their idea, process, and how it connects to their personal culture.
